Vivien and Paul Martin have been exhibiting their work together since 1981. They have both taught widely in adult education and ran summer schools and painting tours during the 1980's. They also had a gallery in Brighton briefly but found that it worked better for them to turn their home into a gallery from time to time - which is how they came to be part of the early development of the Open House exhibitions at Fiveways.
"Visiting Giverny" by Vivian Martin They have opened their house as part of the Brighton Festival most years since 1987 and usually had a Christmas exhibition as well. They showed with the Fiveways artists group for several years and are pleased to be rejoining the group in 1999. Vivien Martin studied at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, between 1966 and 1971, completing a Diploma in Art and Design in Sculpture, Painting and Printmaking. She then moved to Goldsmiths College, London, where she gained an Art Teachers Certificate in 1972. At this time she began to travel widely, winning major travel scholarships in 1970/72 to Paris, Egypt and Greece. Since then, travel has been important in her work, particularly in the influence of contrasting landscapes and in some of the implications of travel and tourism.
"Concarneau Sunset " by Vivian Martin She taught art in schools and adult education and gradually developed a balance between work in education and more personal work as an artist. She works mainly in watercolour and makes etchings and other prints, but also likes to work in oils from time to time. She has exhibited frequently in Brighton and London and in other parts of the UK. One of her paintings was chosen for the Laing Calender in 1984 and in 1986 she and Paul Martin took part for the first time in the Brighton Festival Fiveways Open House exhibitions. In 1988 this group became Five at Fiveways and won the ZAP award for the best visual arts event in the Festival. | |
