Stephen Collingbourne

Born in Dartington in Devon in 1943. He studied Painting and Sculpture at Dartington College of Art and Bathe Academy of Art (Corsham). He also studied Bronze Casting techniques at he Royal College in London.

In 1965 he was appointed Lecturer in Fine Art at Dartington College of Arts where he remained until 1970.

After leaving Dartington he worked for the Arts Council running the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens. He then became assistant to the sculptor Robert Adams. After which he lived in Malaysia, also spending time in Thailand and Hong Kong. While in Malaysia he held a one-man exhibition at the British Council Gallery in Kuala Lumpur.

Returning from Malaysia he was appointed Fellow in Sculpture at the University College of Wales.

He was appointed as a full time Lecturer in the School of Sculpture at Edinburgh in 1976. He lived initially in the heart of the city, but for the last 17 years has lived in the Scottish Borders.

His early works were mainly dealing in sculptural space defined in lines and planes, like 3-dimensional drawings. Most of his work was fabricated in welded steel. In recent years the forms have become volumetric and include work in wood, copper and cast bronze. Sources for his work are numerous; landscape and architecture are recurring themes where landscape and man made structures merge. The idea of erosion in landscape is also a recurring theme. Working on paper with mixed media has become an important part of his work in recent years.
