Thank you for visiting my

I am a Yorkshire-based
artist who trained at Middlesbrough College of Art and at the Bath
Academy of Art. I recently retired after 17 years as Principal of
West Dean College in Sussex.
My paintings are based on
simple but memorable observations and responses to favourite places.
I am attracted to the sea and the beach, both are a constant source
of inspiration and a starting point for my images.
The elemental qualities of
sea, beach and sky provide a hint of infinity. They express for me
endless space and distance through transparency, depth and
reflection. In all its moods, the sea shore offers every atmosphere
-- from the still and tranquil to a mighty raging
force.
As a boy, the beach and the
dunes were the place I frequented most. They seemed to offer a
place of private contemplation and I hope through my images to
express and share the same sense of wonder that has inspired the
great tradition of British sea and landscape paintings of the
past.
