Glenn Brown was born in Hexham, Northumberland, in 1966. He studied
at Bath Academy of Art and Goldsmiths College, London. Brown's exact
renderings of other artists' paintings are like a visual game of
Chinese-whispers. Painted from photographs, they are at one remove from
the original image. Through his smooth, flat representations of the
emotionally-charged brush strokes and impasto of famous artists such as
Frank Auerbach and Willem de Kooning, Brown's paintings question issues of
authorship, authenticity, and originality, forcing us to look elsewhere
for the intrinsic value in his own work. Recent exhibitions include
Sensation, Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997), and Glenn
Brown, Jerwood Gallery, London (1999). Glenn Brown lives and works in
London. |
